Vinayakumar Balakrishnan, Kerala created ‘Thooshan’, edible cutlery that can tastefully replace single-use plastic. The edible tableware is made out of wheat bran. The items made using edible wheat bran include food containers, bowls, cups, and cutlery including spoons, fork and knives.

It can withstand temperatures ranging from -10 to 140 degrees. It has a longer shelf life and is also fungus and bacteria-resistant. It is not just eco-friendly but can add enough dietary fiber and protein to your diet when consumed. The items can be as well used as cattle feed, poultry feed, fish feed, and organic manure. The 100% biodegradable product was formulated after consulting with scientists at CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST). The manufacturing happens at a fully automatic robotic plant in Angamaly, Kerala with extreme caution to hygeine. What is edible cutlery made of?

Bakey's edible cutlery is made from a mix of jowar (sorghum), rice and wheat flour. The spoons and chopsticks do not get soggy if placed in water and food. They only soften after some time (10-15 minutes), and thus can be eaten easily at the end of the meal.
